The Telephone / The Old Maid and the Thief
Menotti Double Bill, November 2021
Opera Diaspora
Double bill of comic operas by Gian-Carlo Menotti, performed in the newly refurbished theatre of Rudolph Steiner House. The Telephone is a brilliantly funny and remarkably prescient exploration of our obsession with technology, its purported use in increasing our connection with each other, whilst alienating us to those who we hold closest, more true today than it was even when it was written. The much more rarely staged and equally funny The Old Maid and the Thief was the first ever ‘radio opera’ and shows how people will compromise their ideals in search of something they desire. The production was set in a nunnery to heighten the absurd comedy of the piece and underline the Christian moralising that peppers the libretto.
