Pygmalion / Nelée et Myrthis
Pygmalion / Nelée et Myrthis, June 2022
The Opera Company
A continued exploration of Rameau’s operas, this production paired two of his one act masterpieces at the Théâtre Basse Passière in Normandy. Pygmalion, based on Ovid’s myth of the sculptor in love with his own creation, is firmly established in the repertoire as one Rameau’s most popular works. Conversely, Nelée et Myrthis is almost never performed, but shows just as well Rameau’s genius for character development, melody and dramatic plotting, this time in a comedic context. The production was extremely well received, one of the most popular productions that the Théâtre Basse Passière has ever hosted. Director and Designer: Guido Martin-Brandis. Choreography: Shona Morris. Production photos: Christel Vermaut and Guido Martin-Brandis

“A magical evening of opera. The Opera Company presented a classic and elegant production of Pygmalion, strong on musical and dramatic values. The troupe of four talented young singers, together with the director, Guido Martin Brandis, offered an imaginative and creative interpretation of these two masterpieces, with sublime voices, dance influenced by the movement of the 18th century, and lovely moments of humour.
Music Director Noah Mosley led a small orchestra of highly experienced British Baroque musicians from the keyboard. The playing was refined and full of vitality, with great zest and enthusiasm for this music.”
